Sensory Garden Update

It’s been quite a while since we updated everyone with what is going on at the Best Futures Sensory Garden, so what is the latest?

Our fantastic maintenance team have been looking after the grass, keeping it up to date with routine cutting, making it the best possible surface for the pupils to be able to walk along. As previous agricultural surplus land, it was quite uneven ground, so this has taken some time to get the grass in tip top shape.

Tending to the wildflower meadow has also been on the job list this season, it has now had a fresh cut, and more seed will be sown for next year as well so we can grow a larger area of wildflowers. Whilst it was sprouting, we had a small temporary rabbit wire fence around the wildflowers to create some protection from the rabbits, this has now been removed.

Most definitely the most exciting thing to have happened in the sensory garden is the planting of the fruit trees. In memory of Mr John Spilman, we are creating a fruit orchard at the eastern end of the sensory garden. Dawn and Rose were invited to speak at the Rotary Club in November to explain the positive work of the school and a little bit of history of how Best Futures began. The Rotary Club have kindly donated £500 towards the sensory garden.

A cherry blossom tree has been planted at the western side of the sensory garden, near the entrance. The special part about this tree is that it was planted by Best Futures pupils. While planting, the pupils learned about soil health and discussed ideas for the garden. One pupil said, “I am so happy I planted a tree, when I’m a grown up I will walk on the path and look at the tree and say I did that”.

We’ve also seen some lovely frosty mornings at the sensory garden, please enjoy the accompanying pictures, we are looking forward to spring and to watch the garden burst into life.
